ABSTRACT. The objective was to evaluate the ruminal disappearance rate of dry matter and NDF of black oat haylage subjected to mechanical and chemical dehydration and six wilting periods in the field, as follows: 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 days. Forage haylages were ensiled and stored in PVC mini-silos for 60 days until opening for in situ evaluations. The pre-set ruminal incubation times were: 0, 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours. Regardless of the dehydration time, forage subjected to mechanical dehydration showed ruminal disappearance rates of dry matter and NDF, thus DISDM-48h and DISNDF-48h were superior for this method compared to the chemical method. There was a reduction in DISDM-48h and DISNDF-48h with advancing time of wilting in the field for haylage dehydrated by the chemical method. In general, the chemical dehydration method seems to be more related to better haylage making practices than nutritional factors, where the haylage obtained by mechanical dehydration is superior.

Abstract The objective was to evaluate the fermentative, chemical characteristics and aerobic stability of corn grain silages rehydrated with whey fluid (WF) or whey powder (WP) and water, with or without the addition of inoculant (I). The corn grain was ground and hydrated adding water without chlorine and/or whey to reach 35 % humidity and stored in silos of 4.36 kg. After 45 d of fermentation, samples of the silages were submitted to chemical-fermentative analyses in opening of silos and 240 h of exposure to air. The aerobic stability of the silages was evaluating during 240 h has considered to the loss when the temperature of the ensiled mass exceeded the ambient temperature by 2 °C. A reduction in the acid detergent fiber (ADF) and lignin content of the silages was observed with the use of WF and WP. The levels of ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N) were the lowest for WF and WP (0.7 and 0.9 g/kg TN) and pH was 4.31 for WF after 240 h of aerobic exposure. The use of inoculants provided higher levels of Ash, ether extract (EE), and low buffering capacity (BC), in addition to reductions in ADF levels. The inoculated silages showed higher levels of NH3-N and pH after 240 h. The silage of corn grains rehydrated with WF provided ideal pH values, low NH3-N content, reduced levels of ADF and lignin, and improved aerobic stability. In addition to being a sustainable alternative, the use of fluid whey to rehydrate corn grains adds nutritional value and improves silage fermentation.

Resumen El objetivo fue evaluar las características fermentativas, químicas y la estabilidad aeróbica de los ensilados de grano de maíz rehidratados con suero fluido (SF) o suero en polvo (SP) y agua, con o sin la adición de inoculante (I). El grano de maíz se molió e hidrató añadiendo agua sin cloro y/o suero para alcanzar el 35 % de humedad y se almacenó en silos de 4.36 kg. Tras 45 días de fermentación, se sometieron muestras de los ensilados a análisis químico-fermentativos en apertura de silos y 240 h de exposición al aire. Se considera que la estabilidad aeróbica de los ensilados evaluada durante 240 h se perdió cuando la temperatura de la masa ensilada sobrepasó la temperatura ambiente en 2 °C. Se observó una reducción en el contenido de fibra detergente ácida (FDA) y lignina de los ensilados con el uso de SF y SP. Los niveles de nitrógeno de amoniaco (NH3-N) fueron los más bajos para el SF y el SP (0.7 y 0.9 g/kg TN) y el pH fue de 4.31 para el SF tras 240 h de exposición aeróbica. El uso de inoculantes proporcionó mayores niveles de cenizas, extracto de éter (EE) y baja capacidad de amortiguación (BC), además de reducciones en los niveles de FDA. Los ensilados inoculados mostraron niveles más altos de NH3-N y de pH después de 240 h. El ensilado de granos de maíz rehidratados con SF proporcionó valores de pH ideales, un bajo contenido de NH3-N, niveles reducidos de FDA y lignina, y una mejor estabilidad aeróbica. Además de ser una alternativa sostenible, el uso de suero fluido para rehidratar los granos de maíz añade valor nutricional y mejora la fermentación del ensilado.

ABSTRACT: Grape pomace is a by-product that can be ensiled and added to animal feed for a sustainable animal production. This study evaluated the effects of grape pomace silage (GPS) on the intake, performance, and carcass and meat quality of feedlot lambs. Twenty-four male lambs (21.5 ± 3.0 kg initial body weight) were distributed into pairs to four diets levels 0, 10, 20, and 30 % of GPS. The addition of grape pomace silage influenced only ether extract (EE) intake linearly without hindering consumption. The diet did not affect performance and meat quality attributes and carcass parameters, with average daily gain (ADG) of 0.235 kg d−1, feed conversion 4.299, carcass conformation 2.7, compactness index 0.25 kg cm−1, fat thickness 1.51 mm, loin eye area 13.9 cm2, pH 5.79, natural matter moisture 74.05 g 100 g−1, and crude protein (CP) 19.94 g per 100 g−1 of dry matter (DM). Grape pomace as could be used as silage in lamb diets with up to 30 % GPS, as the chemical composition of this by-product and the results indicate that GPS did not compromise performance, carcass traits, and meat quality.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade químico-fermentativa da silagem de dois híbridos de sorgo nos diferentes estratos da face do silo e a interferência do tempo de exposição aeróbia da face do silo estruturada e/ou desestruturada (após desensilagem). A silagem do híbrido AG-2005E apresentou maior teor de proteína bruta e pH mais elevado em comparação à do híbrido AG-60298 (6,33% e 4,0 contra 6,06% e 3,8, respectivamente). As silagens do estrato de 0 a 20 cm tinham o menor teor de matéria seca e o maior teor de proteína bruta (38% e 6,35%, respectivamente). O pH não diferiu entre os estratos e o teor de NH3 foi maior no estrato de 60 a 80 cm (4,5%). Com o avanço das 72 horas de exposição aeróbia, a silagem desestruturada apresentou maior incremento de temperatura em relação à silagem da face estruturada, mas esse tempo não foi suficiente para mostrar diferenças entre os teores de matéria seca, matéria mineral, NH3 e pH. O híbrido de sorgo e o estrato do silo interferem diretamente na qualidade químico-fermentativa da silagem. Após a exposição aeróbia, a silagem do painel do silo estruturado parece sofrer menor interferência em relação à silagem após ser desensilada.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the chemical and fermentation quality of silage from two sorghum hybrids in different layers of the silo feed-out face, as well as the interference of the aerobic exposure time of structured and/or unstructured silo face (after feed-out). The AG-2005E hybrid silage presented higher crude protein content and higher pH compared to hybrid AG-60298 (6.33% and 4.0 versus 6.06% and 3.8, respectively). Silages from stratum 0 to 20cm had the lowest dry matter content and the highest crude protein content (38% and 6.35%, respectively). The pH did not differ between layers, and the NH3 content was higher in the stratum 60 to 80cm (4.5%). During 72 hours of aerobic exposure, the unstructured silage presented a higher increase in temperature than the silage from the structured face, but this period was not enough to result in differences in dry matter, mineral matter, NH3, and pH. The chemical and fermentation quality of the silage was directly influenced by hybrid and silo stratum. After aerobic exposure, silage from the structured face seems to suffer less interference compared to the silo feed-out face.

ABSTRACT: The use of intercropped grass legumes provides a source of sustainable animal production as these vegetables contribute to an increase in forage yield by area, and substitute inorganic nitrogen and other components. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional characteristics of silages and the yield and milk quality of Holstein cows fed triticale silages in monoculture or intercropped with either oats or legumes. The crops for silage production were triticale (TS), triticale in consortium with forage pea (TSP), and triticale in consortium with oats, forage peas and vetches (TSOPV). The silages showed no differences in dry matter content. The highest crude protein (13.06 %) and ethereal extract content was observed in TSOPV, but in the case of the latter, there was little difference when compared with TS (2.35 and 2.16 %, respectively) although the ash contents of the TSOPV and TSP silages did present a difference compared to TS silage. The neutral and acid detergent fibers (NDF and ADF) and cellulose fractions of TS silage were higher (68.60, 41.46 and 38.19 %, respectively) than those in TSOPV and TSP silages, which also had higher levels of soluble nitrogen, ethanol and acetic acid. Dry matter intake was higher in both TSOPV and TSP, which also provided a higher milk yield (21.19 and 20.45 L cow d−1) compared to that of TS silage (18.74 L cow d−1). Cows fed TS also produced milk with a lower N-ureic content (15.15 mg dL−1). The inclusion of legumes with triticale provided good fermentative quality for silage and increased milk production of cows without altering their concentrations of fat and protein.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this work was to evaluate the chemical composition and rumen disappearance rate of dry matter of corn silages with inoculants combining L. buchneri strain LN40177 in different strata of the silo. The experimental design was a 3x2 randomized complete block design, with three treatments: Control: corn silage without inoculant; 11CFT: corn silage with inoculant which combines L. buchneri strain LN40177 (1.1 x 1011 CFU g-1) with L. casei (1.1 x 1011 CFU g-1); and 11C33: corn silage with inoculant which combines L. buchneri strain LN40177 (1.1 x 1011 CFU g-1) with L. plantarum (1.1 x 1011 CFU g-1) and Enterococcus faecium (1 x 1010 CFU g-1), associated with two strata of the silo (lower and upper). The silage inoculated with 11C33 presented higher contents of crude protein and NDF and lower hemicellulose content in relation to the control treatment and 11CFT. The use of both inoculants resulted in silages with higher concentrations of soluble nutrients. Lower stratum silage had a higher rumen disappearance rate of dry matter compared to the upper stratum. In general, the combinations of L. buchneri promoted nutritional improvements in corn silage, but in presence of L. casei, there were more outstanding improvements.

Objetivou-se avaliar a ingestão de matéria seca, ganho de peso diário, conversão alimentar, digestibilidade e as características da carcaça de novilhos alimentados com dietas à base de silagens de dois híbridos de milho. Os tratamentos foram as silagens de milho provenientes dos híbridos LG6030 PRO e P30B39H. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com seis repetições, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas no tempo, em três períodos de avaliação. Animais alimentados com a silagem de milho LG6030 PRO tiveram maior (P<0,05) ganho médio de peso e melhor conversão alimentar. O tipo de silagem não alterou (P>0,05) a ingestão de matéria seca, ganho médio de carcaça e ganho de carcaça no período de terminação. Contudo, com o hibrido LG 6030 PRO houve melhor eficiência de transformação da matéria seca consumida em carcaça, apesar de menor eficiência de transformação do ganho de peso em carcaça (73,7 contra 76,9%) comparativamente com a dieta com silagem de P30B39H. Além disso, a digestibilidade aparente foi maior (P<0,05) para silagem de milho do híbrido LG6030 PRO, obtendo eficiência de digestão 3,4% superior. Os componentes de rendimento não integrantes da carcaça não foram alterados em função das variações dietéticas das silagens avaliadas. Sendo assim, recomenda-se o híbrido LG6030 PRO para produção de silagem.

This work aimed to evaluate the dry matter consumption, daily weight gain, feed conversion, digestibility and carcass characteristics of confined steers fed with silages from different corn hybrids. The treatments were the silages from the hybrids LG6030 PRO and P30B39H. The experimental design was totally randomized, with 6 repetitions, in a split-plot scheme, in three evaluation periods. Animals fed with silage from hybrid LG6030 PRO showed a higher daily weight gain and better food conversion. The silage type did not alter (P>0.05) dry matter consumption, average carcass gain and carcass gain during the finishing period. However, the hybrid LG6030 PRO improved the efficiency transformation of consumed dry matter into carcass, despite the decrease of efficiency of transformation of weight gain into carcass (73,7 vs 76.9%) comparatively to animals fed with P30B39H silage. Diets containing the hybrid LG6030 PRO reflected in an increase of 3.4% of apparent digestibility. There were no differences of non-carcass components yield between the treatments in this experiment. It is recommended LG6030 PRO for silage production.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of supplementation of two different enzymatic complexes, fibrolytic (NSPases) or amylolytic (EXP3066) enzymes, on growth performance, digestibility, behavior, and carcass characteristics of feedlot cattle. Thirty-six ½ Angus yearling bulls with an average initial weight of 391±5.0 kg were used in this experiment blocked by weight in a completely randomized design divided in three treatments: control, NSPases, and EXP3066. The basal diet was composed of 85% whole corn grain and 15% nucleus. NSPases increased average daily gain on days 63 and 84, and gain:feed ratio on days 42, 63, and 84. Total carcass weight and carcass daily gain were improved by 4.8% and up to 6.0% with EXP3066 and NSPases supplementations, respectively. The group that received NSPases supplementation showed even greater carcass feed efficiency when compared with animals in the control group. There was an increase in apparent dry matter digestibility and a decrease of fecal whole grain residual percentage with enzyme supplementation. Enzyme supplementation affected hot carcass weight and EXP3066 provided greater values for ribeye area and marbling compared with control. Exogenous enzymes improve performance and carcass traits in feedlot cattle fed high-grain diet.

RESUMO. Esse estudo objetivou avaliar a composição bromatológica da forragem e da silagem pré-secada de doze cereais de inverno colhidos em estádio de pré-florescimento. Utilizou-se aveia preta (Avena strigosa) cv. EMB 139 e cv. IAPAR 61, aveia branca (Avena sativa) cv. IPR 126 e cv. URS Taura, cevada (Hordeum vulgare) cv. BRS Brau e cv. BRS Cauê, trigo (Triticum aestivum) cv. BRS Umbu e cv. BRS Tarumã, centeio (Secale cereale) cv. Temprano e cv. BRS Serrano e triticale (X Triticosecale) cv. IPR 111 e cv. BRS Saturno. A colheita ocorreu quando as plantas atingiram estádio de pré-florescimento, onde foram pré-murchadas e ensiladas. O triticale cv. IPR 111 apresentou características químicas notórias em relação aos demais tratamentos, tendo o maior teor de proteína bruta (113,7 g kg-1) e os menores teores de FDN e FDA (657,9 e 380,9 g kg-1, respectivamente). Dentre as silagens pré-secadas a cevada cv. BRS Cauê apresentou a maior concentração de NDT (614,7 g kg-1). O triticale cv. IPR 111 se mostrou como um alimento de alta qualidade nutricional enquanto forragem, e manteve essas características após conservação. Já a silagem pré-secada da cevada cv. BRS Cauê apresentou o maior potencial de degradabilidade de nutrientes.

ABSTRACT. This study aimed to assess the chemical composition of the forage and pre-dried silage from twelve winter cereals harvested at pre-flowering. We used black oat (Avena strigosa) cv. EMB 139 and cv. IAPAR 61; white oat (Avena sativa) cv. IPR and 126 hp. URS Taura; barley (Hordeum vulgare) cv. BRS Brau and cv. BRS Cauê; wheat (Triticum aestivum) cv. BRS Umbu and cv. BRS Tarumã; rye (Secale cereale) cv. Temprano and cv. BRS Serrano; and triticale (X. Triticosecale) cv. IPR and 111 hp. BRS Saturno. Plants were harvested at pre-flowering, when they were pre-dried and ensiled. The analysis of variance evidenced nutritional differences between species and cultivars. Triticale cv. IPR 111 showed notorious chemical characteristics in relation to the other treatments, highest protein content (113.7 g kg-1) and lower content of NDF and ADF (657.9 and 380.9 g kg-1, respectively). Among the pre-dried silages, barley cv. BRS Cauê had the highest level of NDT (614.7 g kg-1). Triticale cv. IPR 111 was shown as a high-quality nutritional food as forage and kept these characteristics after conservation. On the other hand, the pre-dried silage of barley cv. BRS Cauê showed the highest potential for nutrient degradability.

RESUMO. O objetivo do experimento foi avaliar a composição nutricional, a recuperação de matéria seca (MS) e a estabilidade aeróbia de silagens de cereais de inverno submetidas a diferentes tempos de estocagem. Os materiais utilizados foram o trigo (Triticum aestivum cv. BRS Gralha Azul), cevada (Hordeum vulgare cv. BRS Brau), aveia branca (Avena sativa cv. URS Guará), aveia preta (Avena strigosa cv. Embrapa 139) e triticale (X Triticosecale cv. IPR 11), em três tempos de estocagem: 60, 120 e 180 dias. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial 5x3. Na avaliação nutricional, a silagem de cevada apresentou baixos teores de fibra em detergente ácido (FDA; 331; 355 e 378 g kg MS-1, para 60, 120 e 180 dias, respectivamente) e altos de nutrientes digestíveis totais (NDT; 558; 544 e 531 g kg MS-1 para 60, 120 e 180 dias, respectivamente), além de alta recuperação de MS e estabilidade aeróbia. O trigo e o triticale apresentaram decréscimo na recuperação de MS com o aumento dos dias de estocagem, embora tenham apresentado alta estabilidade aeróbia. O tempo de estocagem influenciou de maneira distinta as forrageiras, no entanto, tempos de estocagem acima de 60 dias não proporcionaram benefícios para as variáveis avaliadas.

ABSTRACT. The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the nutritional composition, dry matter (DM) recovery and aerobic stability of winter cereal silages under different storage periods. The materials used were wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. BRS Gralha Azul), barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. BRS Brau), white oat (Avena sativa cv. URS Guará), black oat (Avena strigosa cv. Embrapa 139) and triticale (X Triticosecale IPR 11), in three storage periods: 60, 120 and 180 days. The experiment was conducted in a 5x3 factorial, completely randomized design, consisting of five forage species and three storage periods, with five replicates. In nutritional assessment, barley silage presented low values of acid detergent fiber (ADF; 331.2, 355.2 and 378.5 g kg DM-1 for 60, 120, 180 days, respectively), high total digestible nutrients (TDN; 558.2, 544.7 and 531.6 g kg DM-1 for 60, 120, 180 days, respectively), high DM recovery and aerobic stability. Wheat and triticale showed a decrease in DM recovery with the increase in storage length, although showed high aerobic stability. The storage period had a different effect on forages; however, storage period above 60 days provided no benefits for the variables evaluated.

RESUMO: O uso de adubação nitrogenada em lavouras de milho visando produção de silagem pode manipular tanto a produção, quanto teoricamente melhorar a qualidade nutricional, em especial as frações de carboidratos e proteínas, otimizando a produção animal. Desta forma, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de níveis crescentes de adubação nitrogenada em cobertura sobre o fracionamento de carboidratos e proteínas na silagem de milho (Zea mays L.) resultante. A adubação nitrogenada em cobertura foi realizada em estádio V5, sob a forma uréia (45-00-00), nas seguintes doses: T1: 0kg de N ha-1; T2: 45kg de N ha-1; T3: 90kg de N ha-1; T4 135kg de N ha-1. Após a colheita do material em estádioR4, foi realizada a confecção da silagem em silos experimentais de PVC, e após a abertura dos mesmos avaliou-se a composição química da silagem. Houve diferença estatística (P<0,05) para os teores médios de proteína bruta (PB), assim como de sua fração C, evidenciando que o aumento da dose de nitrogênio em cobertura aumentou linearmente a PB e diminuiu linearmente a sua fração C. Para os carboidratos totais também houve um comportamento linear decrescente em reflexo do consumo destes em detrimento as maiores doses de nitrogênio aplicadas. O aumento da dose de adubação nitrogenada em cobertura à cultura do milho também gerou um incremento nos valores de pH na silagem resultante com comportamento linear. É perceptível que o aumento de doses de nitrogênio em cobertura pode alterar o fracionamento de carboidratos e PB da silagem de milho, sendo que há aumento da participação de fibra solúvel, PB e o pH e redução da fração indigestível da proteína.

ABSTRACT: The use of nitrogen fertilizers in corn crops for silage can improve both production and, theoretically, nutritional quality, especially carbohydrate and protein fractions, thereby optimizing animal production. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of nitrogen fertilization in carbohydrate and protein fractionation on the resulting corn silage (Zea mays L.). Nitrogen fertilization was carried out in the urea form (45-00-00) in V5 stage, at the following doses: T1: 0kg N ha-1; T2: 45kg N ha-1; T3: 90kg N ha-1; and T4: 135kg N ha-1. Crops were harvested at R4 stage and submitted to ensiling in experimental PVC silos. The chemical composition of the resulting silage was evaluated after silo opening. There was no statistical difference (P<0.05) in the average contents of gross protein (GP), as well as its C fraction, showing that increasing nitrogen doses in coverage linearly increased GP and linearly decreased its C fraction. For total carbohydrates, there was a linear decreasing behavior due to such consumption with the highest levels of nitrogen applied. Increased nitrogen fertilization dose in corn also linearly enhanced pH in the resulting silage. Therefore, nitrogen increases in coverage can alter carbohydrates and GP fractionation of corn silage, with increases in soluble fiber, GP, and pH, and reduction in the protein indigestible fraction.
